Sonny’s Solid Waste reminds residents what can, can’t be disposed of in toters

As the weather warms and more and more residents will be out working in their yard, Sonny’s Solid Waste is reminding residents what can and can’t be disposed of in their toters.

The toters are strictly for household trash that is generated on a daily basis. Trash should be bagged, and the bags tied so loose trash does not fall out of the toter. The toters are not to be used for the clean out of a home.

Some items should not be put in the toters. Those items are:

  • Yard waste
  • Oil or oil filters
  • Anything considered hazardous
  • Dirt
  • Concrete
  • Shingles
  • Car parts
  • Tires
  • Paint in liquid form. Use kitty litter to dry it up or leave it sitting out in the sun and double bag any paint cans
  • Spray cans if they are emptied out
  • Construction (all forms)
  • Furniture
  • Dead animals
  • Bodily liquids
  • Human feces
  • Medical waste (They can take sharps if in a fabric softener type container, duct-taped very, very well with the lid on)
  • Appliances

Recycling

Sonny’s does offer streamline recycling which is a sort-free system. Those who take part recycling will be issued green and yellow toters and they are picked up the first Wednesday of the month.

Any food residue should be rinsed clean from items being discarded. The following recyclables are accepted:

  • Corrugated cardboard, gray board and chipboard, including soda, cereal and frozen pizza boxes.
  • Newspaper, magazines, catalogs, junk mail and paper
  • Aluminum, steel and tin
  • Household plastic containers (#1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7)

The following items cannot be recycled:

  • Garbage bags
  • Plastic wrap or waxed paper
  • Pet food bags
  • Hazardous waste and pesticide containers
  • Packing peanuts or bubble wrap
  • Plastics labeled “PLA”
  • Styrofoam
  • Plastic utensils
  • Hardcover books
  • Photographs
  • Paper plates, cups, towels and napkins
  • Tissues, diapers, toilet paper
  • Take-out food containers
  • Foil-lined items such as cookie and chip bags
  • Anything glass

There are also two yellow dumpsters on the south side of the fire station on North West. Those are for cardboard boxes only and must be broken down. Boxes should be empty when put in the dumpsters.

Toters

Sonny’s uses automated trash trucks, meaning there is no longer a guy working on the back of the trash truck. Instead, the trash truck has an “arm” that extends out and picks up the toter which empties it into the truck.

Because of this, residents are asked to not place their toter no more than three feet from the street. Also place the toter three feet from all objects like mailboxes, bushes, trees so the truck can easily access the toter.

The trash must also be in the toter. Any trash beside the toter will not be picked up.

The toters need to be sitting out at midnight the night before trash pickup.
