Despite a light agenda, the meeting room at Lincoln University was filled Monday night for the February Sikeston City Council meeting.

In a change of pace, the meeting was moved to new Lincoln University, in order to reach those who typically would not attend a council meeting.

“We want people to get involved,” said Sikeston Mayor Greg Turnbow. “If you need anything, want anything -- you have a voice. Please speak up and come out.”

With only two items on the agenda, the meeting was a quick one, lasting about 15 minutes. But it didn’t stop people from filling the meeting room.

“We want people to come out and find out what the workings of the city government are. How it works. It involves a lot of pieces are parts and there are a lot of pieces involved,” Turnbow said.

With approximately 35 people in attendance, many stayed after to speak with council members or city officials. Turnbow was pleased with the turnout.

“We appreciate everybody coming out,” the mayor said. “We appreciate the support. We appreciate the university for hosting this.”

He added the plan is to move the meeting around some in the future, however, most meetings will still be held at City Hall.

“As time goes on, we might go to Ward 2 or Ward 3,” Turnbow said. “When we have it at City Hall, come see us. See how everything goes. It’s not bad.”

The following actions were taken during the Sikeston City Council meeting Monday.

  • Council approved rezoning 5.530 acres north of Baker Lane to be known as Magazine Trace from Single Family Residential R-1 to Single Family Residential R-2. Robin Chambers, who is developing the lot, would like to change the zoning due to the smaller lot sizes allowed in R-2 zoning.
  • Council approved creating a subdivision to be known as Magazine Trace, north of Baker Lane. The subdivision will be a gated community with 18 lots that will be a gated area with a clubhouse and pool.
  • Council also heard from Sikeston City Manager Jonathan Douglass that the budget process is underway with the first draft expected to go before Council in April. (Feb. 7, 2023)
