Adopt-A-Park

Adopt-A-Park

A new program developed by Sikeston Parks and Recreation is designed to help keep Sikeston’s parks and trails clean.

The program was developed to encourage the community to take a hands-on approach in helping keep Sikeston’s parks and trails clean, safe and attractive for residents and visitors through debris pick-up and beautification activities.

Adopt-A-Park offers the community a chance to promote civic pride, appreciation, awareness, and a quality of life. Those who commit to adopting a park or trail will be recognized by a sign, purchased by Sikeston Parks and Recreation, that will show who in the community is helping keep the area clean.

Any local individual or group, such as families, businesses or other organizations can “adopt” any park in Sikeston. Some parks are large and may be adopted by multiple volunteers. The parks/trails are assigned to groups on a first come, first-serve basis.

Groups taking part in Adopt-A-Park can contribute labor and skills in their park. With advanced planning, the Sikeston Parks and Recreation Department will approve and supply materials and assist with equipment and tools. Adopting groups are encouraged to plan activities such as picnics, games, walks and clean-up days in their adopted park throughout the year.

Things needed from volunteers are trash and litter pickup, fluffing playground wood chips, tidying up pavilion areas, sweeping hard surfaces and reporting vandalism, unsafe conditions, and necessary repairs.

Sikeston Parks and Recreation is responsible for all landscaping (mowing, tree removal, etc.) unless noted in the volunteer application and will remove all filled trash bags for litter pick-up as well large, heavy, or hazardous items found in the park or along any trails.

There is no charge to adopt a Sikeston park. Only time commitments are needed to complete clean-up tasks.

Individuals or groups who take part in Park Clean-Up and will be responsible for scheduling cleanup twice per month at the park to remove trash and debris. The length of the contract is for one year and is renewable.

Recognition for volunteers will be provided once commitments have been proven to be met. After three months of documented monthly service, a sign will be placed in the park or trail recognizing the adopting volunteer group. A sign will remain in the park or trail if there is a current volunteer application and service is continuing.

Businesses or corporations have the option of a particular park for adoption or a particular improvement for existing parks by providing either funds, materials, labor, or any combination of the four.

An additional level of commitment in the form of donations or sponsorships from individuals, businesses or organizations may be accomplished by contributing monetarily or with tangible goods.

Anyone or group wanting to take part in the Adopt-A-Park program should contact Abbi Lindsey at alindsey@sikeston.org or visit sikeston.org or facebook.com/sikestonparks.
