Building Permits

Building Permit Information

Building permits are required for residential construction as well as commercial construction.

Residential Building Permits
Required for shed, garage/carports, room additions, alterations, demolitions, and ANY new construction on your property.  If you have any questions please first call Code Enforcement at 573-471-2512.

The procedure for obtaining a Residential Building Permit:

  1. Complete & submit a permit application.  Applications can be returned to City Hall, 105 E. Center St., Sikeston, MO. or emailed to agosnell@sikeston.org.       Residential Building Permit Application    
  2. Submit (2 copies) of Site Plan.  Site Plan should be drawn to scale (note which scaled used), driveway location indicated to scale, shall indicate all property dimensions, shall indicate building layout with the front, side and rear building setbacks to property lines, shall include road location, should include easement and setback locations, shall delineate the required location and number of parking spaces (if required for the use proposed) and Directional North arrow.
  3. Submit (2 copies) Floor Plan/blueprint of structure (new homes and alterations/renovations). Floor plan should be drawn to scale (note which scaled used), should indicate panel box location & room measurements; Plans for each level of the structure should be included & basement egress windows marked.
  4. Provide estimate cost and square footage of the proposed project.
  5. Purchase building permit. Offices are located at City Hall, 105 E. Center St., Sikeston, MO 63801.

NOTE:  The City Stormwater Ordinance was recently modified, resulting in the adoption of Ordinance 5816, the Sikeston Stormwater Management Program.  Please see the Sikeston Stormwater Program web page to access land disturbance permit applications, including fee schedule.

Commercial Building Permits
Required for alterations, additions, renovations and construction of r-5 Multiple Family Dwellings, R-7 condominium Dwellings and all commercial projects.

The procedure for obtaining a Commercial Building Permit:

  1. Complete and submit a permit application.  Applications can be returned to City Hall, 105 E. Center St., Sikeston, MO. or emailed to agosnell@sikeston.org.       Commercial Building Permit Application
  2. Submit two (2) complete sets of construction documents.  Documents should be sealed by a registered design professional, as well as one (1) electronic pdf version formatted for large scale printing (via cd or flashdrive), project manuals, and storm water management information. 
  3. Site Plan Required (2 copies) - Site Plan should be drawn to scale (note which saled used), driveway location indicated to scale, shall indicate all property dimensions, shall indicate building layout with the front, side and rear building setbacks to property lines, shall include road location, should include easement and setback locations, shall delineate the required location and number of parking spaces if required for the use proposed and Directional North arrow.
  4. COST BREAKDOWN

Commercial Sign Permits

  1. Complete and submit a permit application.  Applications can be returned to City Hall, 105 E Center St, Sikeston, MO  or emailed to agosnell@sikeston.orgSign Permit Application.
  2. Submit two (2) complete sets of construction documents and 1 pdf version formatted for large scale printing (via CD or Flashdrive).  Documents should be sealed by a registered design professional.  Details showing wind load, footing depth (if applicable), building anchoring (if applicable), any design specifications and calculations, size of sign and height of sign should be indicated on plans
  3. Submit two (2) site plans.  Site Plans should indicate sign location in relation to all property lines and any other building, dimensions of the property, road locations, and the location of any easements.
  4. Include with the plans a cost breakdown for the cost of the sign (construction, signage, & electric costs)
  5. Purchase building Permit.  Offices are located at 105 E. Center, Sikeston, Mo  63801
