Building Permit Information

Building permits are required for residential construction as well as commercial construction.

Residential Building Permits
Required for shed, garage/carports, room additions, alterations, demolitions, and ANY new construction on your property.  If you have any questions please first call Code Enforcement at 471-2512.

The procedure for obtaining a Residential Building Permit:

  1. Complete & submit a permit application. Permit Application Download
  2. Submit a site plan detailing the lot size, location of existing structures on said lot (if applicable), distance of proposed construction to all existing buildings on the lot, the distance of the proposed construction to the property lines [no smaller than letter size (8½ x 11) and no larger than ledger size (11 x 17)].
  3. Submit blueprint of structure (new homes and alterations/renovations).    [no smaller than letter size (8½ x 11) and no larger than ledger size (11 x 17)].
  4. Provide estimate cost and square footage of the proposed project.
  5. Purchase building permit. Offices are located at City Hall, 105 E. Center St., Sikeston, MO 63801.

NOTE:  The City Storm water ordinance was recently modified, resulting in the adoption of Ordinance 5816 the Sikeston Stormwater Management Program. Please see the Sikeston Stormwater Program web page to access land disturbance permit applications, including fee schedule.

If you do not find your project on the Permit Application, please first call Code Enforcement at 471-2512.

Commercial Building Permits
Required for alterations, additions, renovations and construction of r-5 Multiple Family Dwellings, R-7 condominium Dwellings and all commercial projects.

The procedure for obtaining a Commercial Building Permit:

  1. Complete and submit a permit application.  Permit Application Download
  2. Submit one (1) complete set of sealed architectural plans, as well as, one (1) electronic pdf version formatted for large scale printing (via cd or flashdrive), project manuals, and storm water management information 
  3. Include with the plans a cost breakdown for the entire project. Example below:

    Mechanical/HVAC/Plumbing $
    Electric Cost $
  4. Purchase building permit.  Offices are located at City Hall, 105 E. Center St., Sikeson, MO 63801.
