The Sikeston Police Department’s D.A.R.E.  program is a cooperative effort between parents, teachers and police officers to educate students about the dangerous consequences of using and abusing alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs. D.A.R.E. also teaches students how to resolve conflicts without resorting to violence. The core curriculum of D.A.R.E. , which is taught at all Sikeston elementary and middle  schools, consists of lesson plans which addresses issues of self-esteem, decision making, gangs, and peer pressure. The emphasis of the lessons is to provide and to reinforce the information and skills to enable students to resist pressures to use drugs or become involved in violence.  In addition, the lessons focus on helping students manage their feelings of anger and resolve conflicts without causing harm to themselves or others and without resorting to violence or the use of alcohol and drugs. Continuing emphasis is also directed toward helping students develop the skills and qualities needed to achieve good character and citizenship.
