In April, 2002, Sikeston voters approved a home rule charter. The charter called for the city to be divided into four wards with each ward having representation on the City Council. The goals the City Council envisioned in designing wards were to have as equal representation as possible to the other wards, to ensure common interests among the residents of each ward and to have clear boundaries. Most importantly, the Council’s intent is to ease any confusion for the residents of Sikeston. The population numbers used are based on the 2000 U.S. Census counts.  Four proposals of ward systems were presented to the public to view at nine locations city-wide and on this web site and drop-boxes were available for citizens of Sikeston for comments.  Based on these comments the Sikeston City Council voted to accept Ward Option 4 on July 1, 2002.
